EXPANDING COMMUNITY CARE

Far too many Americans are unable to access low-cost and quality health care services. The COVID-19 pandemic shined a light on these existing barriers to care — which includes anything from skyrocketing costs to lack of transportation — and showcased how retailers can play an important role in closing this gap in their communities.

Local and state lawmakers should champion policies that make it easier for retailers to meet the health needs of communities and empower patients, such as expanding the scope of practice for retail pharmacists so they can provide a broader range of additional health care services.

Walmart, for instance, now offers affordable, convenient health care services across the United States. Today, Americans are able to access a wide range of health and wellness products and services at Walmart including:

  • LOW-COST PRESCRIPTIONS: Walmart offers $4 prescriptions for 30-day supplies of certain generic medications.

  • OVER-THE-COUNTER HEARING AIDS: A broad assortment of high-quality hearing aids are available over-the-counter at Walmart stores.

  • VISION CENTERS: Walmart customers can receive eye exams and shop for affordable prescription glasses and contact lenses at Walmart Vision Centers.

  • AFFORDABLE INSULIN: Walmart’s ReliOn™ NovoLog® vials and FlexPens® save customers between 58% and 75% off the cash price of branded insulin products.
